Grandin Theatre Film Lab, announces 3rd Annual Film Lab Festival

ROANOKE, VA – The Grandin Theatre Film Lab program launched in fall 2016 by the Grandin Theatre Foundation will celebrate its third annual Film Lab Film Festival on Tuesday, May 21st at 7:15 pm in the Main Theatre. The students who are currently involved in the afterschool program for high-school aged students will present their semester’s work in the format of four narrative short films that represent several different genres. The show will include narrated Q&A’s with student filmmakers and coordinators at the end of the screenings.

This film festival is a fundraiser for the Film Lab program, which is entirely dedicated to teaching students the process of filmmaking, screenwriting, editing, production, and promotion. The event is open to the public and admission is $5 general admission for everyone.

Each of the narrative films being presented were written, filmed and edited by the students. The Film Lab students will showcase a movie about grief and reconnecting; a thriller involving dreams vs. reality with a slight supernatural component; a parody of film noir movies starring a sentient piece of toast as the lead character; and their first ever "superhero" movie that is about a kid who is being bullied and how he learns to be heroic. In addition to these four narrative short films, the students made two music videos, a profile of a local business in Grandin Village, and 2 micro horror shorts will also be screened. There will be a little something for everyone! These films are the culmination of their curriculum-based learning and their group work for the 2018-19 curriculum year.

“Every year our students continue to push the program in new directions, whether its new ideas for stories or bolder production techniques,” said Film Lab Program Coordinator, Tyler Lyon. “We were so impressed with their first two years, and their award-winning efforts, that we absolutely cannot wait to see what Year 3’s films are going to look like,” said Ian Fortier, Grandin Theatre Executive Director.

The Grandin Theatre Film Lab has multiple grantors and sponsors ensuring this program is a success, including The Roanoke Arts Commission, The Sam and Marion Golden Helping Hands Foundation, the Allstate Helping Hands Foundation, the Honey Tree Foundation, For Alison Foundation, and the Wells Fargo Foundation.
