The Grandin Theatre transitions to renewable energy with support from the Clean Valley Council!

ROANOKE, VA – July 19, 2019 – The Grandin Theatre is going Green!! With the support of the Clean Valley Council as their new Clean Energy Partner, starting in July 2019 the Grandin will receive all of its electricity to power the Theatre from renewable energy sources. The conversion to green energy sources is made possible by the new Wind/Water/Sunlight Tariff program offered by AEP, which allows residential and commercial customers to pay more to ensure energy they use comes from clean, green sources. The additional cost to the Grandin Theatre Foundation annually is just about $1000 per year, which will be covered by Clean Valley Council through June 2021.

“The Grandin is much more than a movie theatre, it is also a cultural community center and icon, as well as a historic landmark in our region,” said Grandin Theatre Foundation Executive Director Ian Fortier. “We want to make sure that we are at the forefront of ensuring we constantly strive to do the right thing and be the right kind of role model for our community and the patrons and guests we serve. Mostly, we want to be conscious about our environmental impact and ways we can lessen it and focus on sustainability for future generations.”

““We are thrilled about this opportunity to support the oldest arts and cultural organization in our region as they strive to lessen their environmental impact and be a leader in our community”, said Clean Valley Council Executive Director, Mary Ann Brenchick. “To be at the forefront of helping other organizations, such as our neighbor The Grandin Theatre, blends perfectly with our mission of leading the way towards a more sustainable tomorrow.”

The AEP Wind/Water/Sunlight Tariff is a new program and The Grandin Theatre Foundation is the first arts and cultural nonprofit organization to utilize the opportunity to go green by using it. A community conversation kick-off hour will occur in the lobby of the Grandin Theatre bar between 6-7 pm on Wednesday, July 24th. All are welcome.
