Oct 11th is National Coming Out Day- a day that champions and amplifies the voices of LBGTQ+ communities across our nation and reminds us that homophobia and hate thrive in silence. It is through visibility, vulnerability, family and community support, and safe platforms to share stories, that we can begin to break down destructive stereotypes, stop hate crime and violence, and move toward a world with more compassion and equality.
Hoot and Holler in cahoots with The Roanoke Diversity Center, would like to invite our community to an evening of powerful stories that shine a light on these pivotal moments in the journey towards self acceptance and the often rocky path towards declaring and owning one’s sexuality. This will be an unforgettable night of powerful, heart-full, complicated, humbling, and true stories told live from the majestic Grandin Theatre.
Coming out is a process and no two stories are the same. We would like to give space for these stories to be shared. Whether you were embraced and applauded, rejected and turned away, celebrated or scorned, you are welcome here. Perhaps you’ve been waiting for the right moment. Perhaps you are an ally/friend/parent/stranger who is the safe haven for someone to turn towards. Whatever the case, this night is for you!
Interested in being a storyteller?
We’d love to hear your pitch! Please submit your story through Facebook messenger to the Hoot and Holler Facebook page. We are looking for truth, bravery, humor, and humanity. What compels you to want to share your story on stage? Send us your beginning, middle, and end with all of the juicy highlights.
If you are selected to share a story, you will be coached and supported each step of the way as you ready yourself to take the mic.
